Hi, my name is Beth and I´m here on behalf of Aula Inglés talking to you today about social customs and habits in UK families to prepare you for when you go and work as an au pair in these families in the United Kingdom; and I hope that I can help you a little bit with top tips on what to do.

So, of course between different countries there are such different social norms and social customs and sometimes, when you visit a country for the first time it can be slightly shocking because people are doing things very differently to the way that you´re used to. This can be especially significant when you´re in a family like you will be as an au pair. So I hope that I can help you prepare for this.

I actually worked as an au pair last summer and it was in Spain and I certainly noticed cultural differences and I had to really get used to them, but you do and it´s a fantastic way of immersing yourself in the culture of the country that you´re in.

So in the UK, you should bear in mind that regions differ a lot; so in the north some families might be a certain way and other families in different areas might behave and interact in different ways. For example, in England I would say that people are slightly louder and more animated than in the south but you have to bear in mind that there will be different social customs in different areas.

I think that it is also very important to go into your au pairing open minded and ready to adapt to the social customs of the family and to the routine of the family as well. This is so that you can be respectful and really immerse yourself like I said.

One top tip to prepare yourself is that in England (and the UK in general) people notice that we have very strong manners and in general people are very polite. They say ´thank you, sorry, excuse me and please´ constantly and when you arrive it might seem slightly over the top but it´s very normal and it´s a good idea if when you´re speaking English maybe you can also adapt the way that you´re speaking to the way that your family are speaking. This is very polite and very normal there.

Also, there is a slight stereotype that people in the UK are maybe more reserved that others and this could be true in comparison to Spain. Sometimes people are less animated and less warm and that doesn´t mean that they´re not friendly or kind or nice people, it is just the way that people are. They express themselves in different ways to how we´re used to here in Spain.

I would also say that something that we do in England, and which I would recommend that you also do is that when we visit a house for the first time, or a family for the first time it´s very polite to bring a gift with you. If you can bring some flowers for example or some chocolates that´s often very polite and friendly; it could be a really good idea for your au pair family as it would make a good first impression, you could maybe bring a present for the children of the family too.

Also, prepare yourself, because in the UK we do sometimes have quite strong accents and so especially in the northern regions you might find, initially, that the accents are really strong and you struggle to understand them but don´t worry! After a bit of time you will become accustomed and you will get very used to it, but sometimes we do have strong accents in different regions in the UK.

I think the most important cultural difference between the UK and Spain is the routine. So I thought it might be helpful for you if I take you through a normal, generic, school day for children in the UK. Often the day starts at about 7:30 and you have breakfast at about eight o´clock. Breakfast often consists of toast, cereal, fruit and of course tea because we drink so much tea in England. School and work start at around 9 o´clock in the morning, lunch normally takes place at midday between twelve and one. Lunch isn´t a big thing in the UK, so we don´t sit down and have a big meal, it would normally consist of sandwich and a soup and there´s no siesta (sadly). The day then finishes, normally, around four or five o´clock when people will come home from work and school and then you normally have dinner at a round seven o´clock, but young children eat very early in the UK often they can eat at five o´clock in the afternoon and that is obviously very different to the way that you do things here in Spain. And then at nighttime mostly children go to bed between seven and eight o´clock so again it is very early and adults it´s normally much later than that.

Normally in England, in the weekdays people don´t eat together as a big family but on the weekends we really like to do that. On  a Sunday we have a traditional meal that we eat which is called a Sunday roast and I´m sure that you will really enjoy it. It consists of a roasted meat and then we have vegetables and potatoes and we have a pastry that we call a ´Yorkshire Pudding´. That is very normal for a family to eat on a Sunday and they come together and talk about their week, it is very lovely!

Another important top tip, for when you go to the UK to be an au pair, is punctuality because in Britain we are very punctual – it isn´t just a stereotype we do really try to be punctual for as much as we can. That is not just for formal occasions, it isn´t just for flights or meeting etc it is also for social occasions so for a party or a dinner you should also try to arrive on time. And I think that to make a good impression on your au pair family, you should try to be on time as much as you can. Also, of course in the UK we drink a lot of tea! So maybe a good idea would to be to practice making good cups of tea for your new English friends and au pair family.

In addition, something very different about English houses, which you do not see much in Spain is that we have mainly carpets on the floor of our family houses. I know that here in Spain it is much more commun to have wooden floor, but because of the weather in the UK we need to be able to conserve the warmth in our homes and therefore often we use carpets. However this means that often you will be ecpected to take of your shoes in the porch before entering the actual house so that you do not stain the carpet.

Finally, as one last piece of advice I would advise you to prepare yourselves for the Bristish weather! Unfortunately we do get a lot of rain in the UK so make sure you do not foget your umbrella!

Es un hecho bien sabido que existen muchas diferencias en normas y costumbres sociales entre países diferentes. Cuando visitas un país por la primera vez puede ser un poco sorprendente porque sociedad funciona en una manera diferente, es especialmente notable en una familia, como tú vas a experimentar. Así voy a intentar prepararte para este.

Yo trabajaba como una au pair el verano pasado en España y tenía que acostumbrarme a las diferencias culturales. Con tiempo siempre se acostumbra y es una oportunidad fenomenal sumergirte en la cultura del país.

En el Reino Unido, deberías tener en cuenta que todas las regiones son muy diferentes; por ejemplo en el norte de Inglaterra algunas familias pueden ser más coloridas y animadas que familias en el sur. Por eso, familias en el norte comportan y interactúan en una cierta manera y otras familias en el sur comportan de forma distinta.

También creo que es muy importante entrar en ser un au pair con una mente abierta y deberías estar listo adaptar a las costumbres de la familia y su rutina también para ser respetuoso y para sumergirte completamente en la cultura allí.

Algo que siempre se nota la gente extranjera que viene al Reino Unido es el hecho de que las personas allí son increíblemente educadas. Siempre se dice ´Thank you, sorry, excuse me and please´. Te podría parecer un poco demasiado pero en realidad es muy normal hablar así en Inglaterra. Sería una buena idea adaptar de hablar inglés en una manera parecida a tu familia. Este es muy educado y normal allí.

Además, existe un estereotipo que la gente inglesa es más reservada que gente de otros países, este podría ser verdadera en comparación con España. A veces la gente es menos animada pero recuerda que este no significa que no es simpática, amable o buena gente, simplemente es comportamiento normal en el Reino Unido. La gente inglesa se expresa de forma distinta a la gente en España.

También aconsejaría que traigas un regalo pequeño para tu familia au pair  y para los niños también en el Reino Unido, a menudo en visitar la casa de un amigo por la primera vez se trae algo como chocolates, flores o una botella de vino. Es muy educada y amigable hacer este.

Además prepárate porque en Inglaterra especialmente tenemos acentos fuertes pero depende en la región en Inglaterra. Especialmente en las regiones en el norte es posible que inicialmente encuentres el acento un poco difícil entender pero no te preocupes, con tiempo se convierte cada vez más fácil.

Creo que la diferencia cultural más notable entre España y Inglaterra es la rutina entonces te voy a describir una jornada escolar para niños en el Reino Unido. ¡Normalmente el día empieza a las siete y media, se desayuna a las ocho, el desayuno normalmente consiste de tostada, cereales y fruta y obviamente té porque en Inglaterra bebemos tanto té! Empieza trabajo o escuela a las nueve, se almuerce al mediodía, entre las doce y la una. ¡Almorzar no es una gran cosa en el Reino Unido, entonces no se pasa mucho tiempo comiendo juntos, normalmente solamente un bocadillo y una sopa y también (tristemente) no hay siestas! Pero normalmente  el día termina a las cuatro o las cinco de la tarde cuando se vuelve a casa de escuela o trabajo. Luego se cena a las siete pero los niños jóvenes cenan muy temprano aquí en el Reino Unido, muchas veces cenan a las cinco de la tarde. Claramente este es muy diferente a lo que estáis acostumbrados en España. Por la noche a menudo los niños van a la cama entre las siete y ocho, también muy temprano en comparación con España y para adultos normalmente van a la cama mucho más tarde.

En Inglaterra, en los días laborales no se cena juntos pero durante los fines de semana disfrutamos mucho cenar juntos. En el Domingo tenemos una cena tradicional llamada un ´Sunday Roast´. Estoy segura que te guste. Normalmente la cena consiste de carne asada, verduras, patatas asadas y tenemos una pasta que se llama un ´Yorkshire pudding´. Es muy normal para una familia del Reino Unido cenar junta en Domingo para reunirse, hablar sobre ha pasado durante la semana pasada y es una tradición muy bonita.

Un otro consejo práctico que te daría para prepararte para ser un au pair en el Reino unido es ser puntual, en el Reino Unido la puntualidad es muy importante. No es un estereotipo falso es muy real que todo el mundo en el Reino Unido llegue puntualmente. Este no solo aplica a eventos formales como reuniones o para vuelos o trenes; aplica a los eventos sociales también. Por eso para fiestas o una cena deberías intentar llegar a tiempo. Creo que para hacer una buena impresión a tu familia au pair sería genial si podrías intentar llegar a tiempo.

Además, es un hecho bien sabido que en el Reino Unido bebemos mucho té. Por eso quizás un buen idea sería practicar hacer una taza de té perfecta.

En adición algo diferente sobre las casas en el Reino Unido que las casas españolas no tienen es la alfombra. Sé que es más común aquí en España tener el suelo de madera pero en el Reino Unido, a menudo las casas familiares tienen carpeta porque ayuda conservar el calor pero este significa que deberías quitar los zapatos en la entrada antes de entrar la casa para no manchar la alfombra.

¡Finalmente, te aviso sobre el tiempo en el Reino Unido! ¡La verdad es que llueve mucho allí entonces no olvides tu paraguas!
